Glow plug light(lack of)

Post by smillingjimmyc » Thu Nov 06, 2014 11:27 am

I've put off asking this in case its something obvious and I look stupid  My glow plug light doesn't work however I can hear the relay click so its ok,the mystery is that when the relay clicks there is an audible beep almost immediatley. Is it possible this has replaced the light,if so why?

i would test the voltage at the plug rail just to be sure they are working.
the glow plug light is a dual purpose light, it also acts as a fault warning light for the charge system if it on an early bongo. has yours got a split charge system fitted.

Thanks!Yes its a split system. Had it checked by auto electrician a month or so ago as a fuse went which meant the leisure batt wasn't charging but all ok now.I did mean to ask about the glow plug light/beep but forgot I just wondered if it was the norm for an audible indication as well as a light.

I would have thought the beep when you switch on would be a coolant alarm.

You can hear the glow plug relay 'Clunk' but that's all. Normaly.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

This might sound stupid but, have you checked the Bulb.

No,I just assumed the bulb was u/s and i meant to get the auto elec to look at it but I forgot.I had a coolant alarm fitted which displays the temp at exact same time as relay click/beep so no need for light really, the beep was there before I had the alarm fitted though.

I think Bob was enquiring if you have a low coolant alarm rather than digital temp gauge. The former does make a noise as soon as the ignition is switched on.

Correct Simon, thanks.

Is it possible the glow plug light has to function in order for the plugs to heat?

if it has a fault on the charging system, (my previous question) someone may have removed the bulb and installed a non standard buzzer to say the plugs are ok but covers up the annoying flashing glowplug light, possibly thinking it may affect an mot test.

if this turns out to be the case shout again with more details of your split charge system, has it got a zig unit or a voltage sensing relay system.

It is a wellway full side conversion(2008),zig unit think.I had full service done when I got it(july) I am suprised the lack of light wasn't mentioned then because the garage were very thorough,I'm back there in march for mot so will mention it then.As I say the van starts and runs great so really not an issue for me just wondered why a beep rather than a light.
