Odd noise from near side rear

Hi

Just wondered if anyone can help with this.

I've just returned from a trip into the hills and on the way up there noticed a strange 'fluttering' from the rear. I think it's the near side. Ages ago there was evidence of a tiny bit of oil/fluid from that side of the rear axle but that is no worse. There's no other noises at all.

'Fluttering' is the only way I can explain it and it does change with speed. It could be tyres I guess and am planning on getting them checked for uneven wear but was wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences?

You weren't by any chance driving past a row of posts or other sound reflecting objects?

Does it change volume/tone as you turn right/left (ie put more or less weight on it)?

(Only asking as mine has some sort of speed-related ticka-ticka-ticka which has been slowly getting more noticeable over the last 6 months - haven't diagnosed it yet - wondered if it might be a bearing.)

My NSF has, what I can only describe as, someone running very fast in flip flops. It too started as a sort of fluttering and has now grown to the point where it's annoying, and not just to me - I get some very startled looks as I drive down the road. I'm advised that it's probably a tyre defect, perhaps caused by the wheel sitting still for a long time, as it might on a quay side.
I'm fitting winter tyres shortly and I'll see if that sorts it out.

I think there is a slight change when you turn left/right but not much. I like the idea of it sounding like someone running in flip flops!!!

As for driving past sound reflecting objects; it happens too often for that and weirdly, I did think about that (I'm a secondary sciences teacher!!)

I also wondered about bearings - I've asked a local friendly garage to give it a quick pre-MOT? Check later in the week and will ask them to properly look at the bearings and tyre conditions. My gut feeling is that it's tyre related. We will see.

I get an odd noise from the near side rear but that is normally connected to the child sat in that seat

Winter tyres fitted and the man with the flipflops has gone, no more noise from NSF. Can't see anything wrong with the tyre but before refitting in the spring I'll go over it with a magnifying glass.

Close inspection of the tyre reveals a flat spot in the middle third of the tread, about 3.5 inches long. It's very difficult to see, and would probably be impossible on the vehicle, but using a straight edge on the tyre against a light I was able to pick out the place. New tyre come the spring

Interesting,you hear plenty from racing drivers about vibration caused by flat spots on tyres after locking up under braking,have never come across flat spots on tyres on a road vehicle though unless it's been parked up for a very long period.
