Burning rubber smell

Post by roosmith » Mon Oct 06, 2014 9:16 am

I've mentioned in passing about this problem in another post but didn't get much back - a couple of times now, when towing up a prolonged hill, I get a hot/burning rubber smell. As soon as you get up the hill the smell disappears. I've had a look and can't see anything belt related obvious and the coolant gauge is reading around 96, so don't think it's cooling related. I'm now thinking gearbox related but would that make a rubber smell?

have a look at this ink mate, yours is about the right age for this to happen.

Thanks, that makes some sense. I don't have any noises but the rubber bonding slipping would explain the smell.

Now just to find someone to have a look/do the work, as there ain't no way I can do that!

could be just the 3 belts need nipping up mate try that first, i would check them anyway, they may show you that the bottom pulley is having problems if they are wearing in a strange way, they can wear thin as the pulley is moving sideways, this could be your burning smell.
