corroded brake disk

Hello again,

I have just had new boots fitted to my "el bonguito" and the dude happened to mention that he was concerned about the offside rear brake disk. All the others are nice and shiny all the way across but this one is corroded at the edges of the disk and only looks 'rubbed clean' in the centre portion.

I don't use el bonguito too often and the disks tend to develop a nice coating of rust between uses which then comes off after a little driving. This hasn't happened on this one disk. My guess is that it just got too corroded.

Should I be concerned about this? Should I get a new disk fitted and be more careful to keep it clean or just forget about it? He mentioned that it would probably fail its MOT.

Most discs have a small 'unswept' part of the disc where the pad does not grip .. just depends how big the amount the area is he is talking about ..

This is one of my front discs that generaly get double the wear as the rear..



Maybe prudent to get the caliper / slide pins / pads checked anyway .. luckily the rear discs / pads are easily sourced .. not mega money .. and quite easy to change..

The caliper could be partially seized, that happened on ours so the brake was only working on one of the pads. That only became apparent when the working pad (on the blind side of the disc) had worn down to the metal and then the inevitable metallic squealing as the pad rubbed on the disc. But because it was on the blind side the disc still looked good - until the whole lot was stripped down....

It will not fail the MOTT as long as the disks are not worn beyond the permissible thickness or cracked, if they are just a bit pitted they should be ok.

PS, this is more of a problem with rear brake components (disks Pads)as they get less use(pressure) than the fronts.
