Hi
95 diesel, LCA and TM2 fitted. Normal running is 87-92, but rises rapidly on steep hills or when in stationary/heavy traffic, and smells very hot..
At what temperature should I set the alarm, and what temperature should be treated as 'critical', ie "pull over, now!!"?

Mine runs at around 89-91 driving, and climbs to 95-96 on normal hills. Very steep hills it'll rise to 100 at a push, though that's rare. Usually it stays below 100.
On one VERY steep hill in the Somerset Quantocks, it climbed to 105.
I set my alarm for 110.
Mine does not climb in traffic.

I've set mine a few degrees above the normal 'hot' running temperature i.e. at top of big hill having been stuck in slow moving traffic. I've got the twin sensor TM4 with one sensor on each head (V6) which run a few degrees different & I think they are set to around the 96 / 98C mark. Sometimes if you switch off after a long hot run, the engine temperature will continue to rise as the coolant is no longer circulating. That may trigger the alarm in which case crank it up another couple of degrees.

If the sensor is fitted in the recommended position (back of cylinder head) between 85 and 95 would be normal for a diesel......set the alarm for 100 to 105........critical I would say was 115 upwards

My diesel is set for 105 and for the first time last week went off in anger. We were towing a 1.5 tonne caravan up and down the A66 at around 50mph with a ferocious head wind. We got to the top of one particularly arduous hill screaming in 2nd gear and it showed about 103, pulled over and the lack of wind under the van immediately pushed it to 106. The reason we pulled over was more the smell of burning rubber than the temp gauge, of which I'm yet to find the source of. It calmed down and we carried on without issue, towing back 250 miles without incident at 60mph, with the gauge at around 96.

I set mine for plenty of warning at 94. It will go off (rarely), but it makes me check. Don't worry about 100 C, as Haydn says....
My temperatures are normally around 92 climbing hills in ambient temperature of 30- 38 C When it gets warmer than that (ambient), it can rise a bit more if you climb hills slowly.I saw 97 - 99C when climbing a BIG hill in 42 C. ambient temp...when I speeded up, the temperature dropped....the radiator likes a nice bit of air through it...
