Central Locking

Post by weebrian » Fri Aug 22, 2014 11:45 am

In every car I've had, when they central locking ceases to work, I have replaced the battery in the fob and that has solved the problem.
My Bongo has exhibited the same symptoms but a change of battery has made little or no difference but after a long run or when the vehicle battery has been on charge, things work as they should do.
The system is original Mazda but why should a fully charged vehicle battery affect the central locking?

Most remote fobs are third party add-ons which control only the drivers door, as the original Bongo central locking is driven by the key in the drivers door.
If your key continues to operate the Central Locking as normal then its the added remote fob that is the cause of the problem, not the central locking.
If your key doesn't work the central locking then the most likely suspect is broken wire in the drivers door loom or possibly a flat L/B if one is fitted as the power for the remote fob comes from the unswitched supply that is normally moved over to the L/B if fitted.

Thanks for that Geoff. makes sense as it has only happened since I fitted a Willinton kit and changed some functions to the LB, which isn't in the best condition in the world. Would explain why it's OK when fully charged but I still don't understand why it only affects the operation using the remote but not the key.

The normal Bongo has Central Locking but NO remote, so when you turn the key in the drivers door, it manually unlocks the drivers door but at the same time operates a switch that electrically releases the other doors. The added Remote fob simply does the same thing by having a motor that turns the drivers lock internally, this releases the drivers door, and turns the same switch to release the other doors electrically. Its the power for the remote and the electrical operation of the other doors that comes from the Top Left fuse, which is the problem when you have a flat L/B!

Both of my bongs have remote central locking, one is a 1997 & the other is a 2001. I've had occasion to remove the driver's door cards to carry out work and both are factory fitted units with purpose made witing looms. Most people fit after market units because during the import process the fobs go missing. My 2001 came into the country with out a fob so I assumed no remote locking. Bought all the gear to fit remote locking and when I removed the door card found the remote unit installed as standard. So sourced a fob from a breakers and reprogrammed the remote unit for the second hand fob.
by the way, I to fitted a Wilton kit to run stuff off the LB and had same problems with the locking due to poor LB.

most bongo.s actually have the remote sensor fitted as standard, its just that the fobs go missing.
remove the drivers window switch and look for the plastic rain /weather cover and the wiring loom, its stuck to the outer door panel straight below the switch.
never had any luck in reprogramming a new fob to the old sensor though. #-o #-o .

The Japanese use a different frequency to that allocated in the uk for central locking systems. So you have to obtain a fob from a grey import. Mazda vehicles sold in uk are exported with from japan with the sytem that is uk frequency, so they're no use ither. If you can get one the reprogramming is dead easy. Remove the drivers door panel and you will find the central locking module attached to the panel. It's small black plastic box and you will find a small hole in the case. This had a small button in it that canrbe depressed with a small diameter screw driver. Depress this re-set button and whilst holding it in press then new remote locking button the central locking unit will now be learning the new frequency & once it's learnt you will get 3 clunk clicks of the central locking denoting that the operstion is completed.

Do you know if you can program multiple remotes to one vehicle? I would guess you could so all remotes would be unique code but could then be paired to particular vehicle.

This is the general type made by Naldec that came with Bongos equipped with remote central locking: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-ranger-o ... 4d23032847

Bongo-specific version:
