I've ordered a Bosch filter just in case that cures it.

So then.......

the noise is coming from the too end, rear cylinder.

Hooing it's a tappet that needs adjusting, can't see it being a broken tappet as she's running sweetly.

Gasket and bolt seals on order. May order a tappet too in case ones damaged

Finally got to the bottom of it :D

Popped the rocker cover off & not only were all of the rockers really lose (all over 1mm), but one of the rockers had slipped off the valve because it was so lose. This had it badly damaged the fork that prevents it slipping off the valve, so I've ordered a couple so I have a spare once I repair.

New rocker fitted, valves all adjusted & all is well again, can't believe the difference in having the rocket clearances set correctly makes to the noise levels, way more than on the old BL A-series lumps.

Some of the clearances were actually nearly 4mm!!! No wonder one of the rockers had slipped of the valve stem, the recess to locate the stem is only 2.6mm, I'm lucky more didn't go the same way.
