Aircon problem

Post by elbee » Sat Aug 09, 2014 10:34 am

I had my aircon regassed today by a local garage as it was not cooling down much. They removed all the old stuff and recharged with 950g of gas, they said there was no leaks but now when I put the air con on there is a pulsing noise from underneath the passenger seat as if the compressor wants to kick in, they said it was probably the compressor that had gone but that noise wasn't there before the regass

Anyone had similar problems? If it is the compressor is it a big/ expensive job?

Thanks drive belt ok, how do I check the clutch mech? Actually not sure if the pulsing is coming from the passenger side seems like it's coming from underneath the vehicle. :?

Make sure the under tray is not hanging down, and no stray animals.

Are you sure it not just the noise of the rad (air con )fan .If your air con was needing pressurised you would not have heard it before it was gassed.

The air con fan doesn't seem to be working when I looked under the passenger seat engine bay but when I disconnected the wire to the compressor the noise stopped. It's quite a noticeable thumping noise every 2 -3 seconds when the air con is on. Should the fan work even if the compressor is faulty? :?
By the way forgot to mention there is no cool air at all :(

The fan that you are looking for is bolted to the coolant radiator (one of Two) The fan should come on when you turn ignition on, and turn the heater fan on then select Air con. The fan under the passengers seat is the Scavenger Fan.

By the sound of things you should not mess with it, take it back to the person that serviced the air con, they should have checked the system was functioning satisfactory .( Unless they did not Charge you for the work carried out)

Good luck.

Finally Sorted the problem, the initial garage I took it to overfilled the system, instead of 950g they put in 1725g
The aircon specialist couldn't believe it, he said the noise I was hearing was the clutch kicking in and out, he said it was a miracle that the compressor was not damaged.

The aircon is now working perfectly, so lesson learned, I will be using an aircon specialist from now on.

Just for information for all you peeps in South Wales the guy that sorted it was Steve Penpraze mobile air conditioning service. 07973 912032 he's brilliant and has all the specialist kit on his van. He said he'd worked on quite a few Bongos and Freda's over the last few years. :D
