Separating twin starter batteries to LB & SB cicuits

Post by peterhf1 » Sat Jun 07, 2014 6:05 pm

I have a "winter pack" Bongo with twin SBs. I want to convert to a single SB with a separate LB circuit. Question is what circuits do I need to route to the LB? I think that I once saw a description on the Forum of a simple change to just or two wires, but can't find it now I need it!)

The minimum is normally the 10 Amp Top Left and the 15 Amp Top Right, after that the two blinds fuses 15 Amp Top Row Right of centre.

What circuits you "need" to reroute is up to you, but as Geoff says, most people reroute the blinds, then Fuse 1 and Fuse 8 - which covers radio, 12v sockets, interior lights. After that, anything you add you can plumb into the LB.

To actually separate them you need to cut the thick live cable that links the two batteries and insulate it well where you make the cut (easy as you can tape it up and push it back into it's plastic trunking)

Thanks for the replies, which has increased my confidence that this is a job I should be able to handle!

One thing, you refer to "cutting the thick cable connecting the two batteries". As I want to fit a voltage sensing relay, can I simply fix the relay to either side of the cut cable (plus the additional earth wire to the starter battery)? Or should I fit entirely new cables for the VSR?

You can indeed do that, you'll just need to buy some hefty connectors to reduce the size of the cable and make sure you insulate it well.
