Re: drive shaft seal
before you strip everything, check the breather is clear on the top of the diff, if this is blocked or rusted shut when the oil gets hot it forces it past the seal.
sometimes fixing the breather eases the pressure on the seals.

Re: drive shaft seal
Thanks for that will do.Do you know if you can change seal by removing shaft from diff side only or does the full shaft need to come off?
Re: drive shaft seal
Thanks. can you get access to breather whilst still on vehicle?

Yes, it's just on the top of the diff casing.mfc1476 wrote:Thanks. can you get access to breather whilst still on vehicle?
Re: drive shaft seal
I had the same problem when I first got my Bongo , I gave it a good spraying with WD40 spun the vent around a few times , job done leak stopped .
(I renewed the oil at the same time .)

Re: drive shaft seal
as the guys have said the vent is the knobbly thing on the top, try to turn it, its usually stuck.
a squirt with penetrating stuff the screw the top cap round, once free screw it round and try to raise it slightly.
i suppose you can remove thm and do the job right but ive never needed to.
they either get rusted shut or filled up by idiots doing under car treatments like wax oiling.
they are fitted to manual gearboxes, front and rear diffs and transfer boxes so do all the lot while your there.

Re: drive shaft seal
After only 20 miles my bongo locked up again. After getting back to garage and removing replacement diff the bearings seemed ok but there was pressure in the diff when I removed drain plug guessing the vent is bock even though I sprayed and gave it a few turns.I fitted a second diff but I am now worried about transfer box any advice just want to get on the road. Also I have bought a set of rx8 alloys 18" do these fit straight on.
Thanks

Re: drive shaft seal
are your wheels and tyres the correct size ???. and about the same level of wear.
this is essential on a 4wd, if one or more is wrong, or even one badly worn tyre and 3 new this can cause transmission wind up.
this does sound like this is the case with yours.
.
rx8.s will fit, and many do, but what is the load rating on the wheel??. i wouldnt fit them myself.

Re: drive shaft seal
Hi all,
I spotted some oil in one of my rear wheels, and with a bit of poking around found it is axle oil. While I was looking, I cleaned up the wheel and back of the disc vent, and after a few hours, there are no more drips. Searching the forum I found this thread, checked my breather, and it is solid... So I am guessing that this is the problem as the leak seems to have stopped as the diff is cold. I'm leaving it overnight after drowning it in WD40, but it that doesn't work, does anyone know where I can get a new one?
