How do I check gear box oil on a manual?

Post by Michael1308 » Wed Jul 02, 2014 5:57 pm

My Freda is "juddering" a bit when I go to pull off in first and in reverse. I've got a leak that looks like it could be coming from the gear box area or front seels maybe.
I just wondered if there was an easy way to check the gearbox oil before I take it to a garage?
Thanks in advance.

Level plug half way up the side of the box.

SAE 75w-90 long life, 2.5 litre capacity.

Is there any signs of oil coming out of the bell housing.

If so Could be oil on the centre plate.

Thanks Rita.
I don't think I've got a torx bit that size but I'll get one and check the level.
Don't think there's oil from the housing.
On second look it does look to be dripping further up towards the front of the van.

So I've had as good a look as I can. And I think I'm leaking power steering fluid. It looks like Ive also got a leak on the gear box.
Until I get someone to have a look on a ramp what power steering fluid should I get to top up with?
Thanks.

Auto transmission fluid Dexon3 is used for the power steering ..

Yellow capped container at the bottom right of pic: ... after topping up move steering wheel from lock to lock a couple of times to dispel air from system ..
