Noise when engine running

Post by TheStinkyHippy » Fri Jun 27, 2014 7:10 pm

Thanks for the help earlier in the week, the noise I was getting was the scavenger fan. I've replaced that now and fan runs nicely.

Next noise... http://youtu.be/xVdfm99noHo

Hopefully you can hear it over the engine sound. It sounds like a hamster in a wheel.

Sounds like it is coming from the alternator, or the belt area, but not sure what to check/try.
I've never taken a belt off a car before, so please be gentle with me.

95 2.5 diesel

Thanks for all your support.. Billy is slowly getting smoother

11-371 in this link is the crank pulley, this is a 2 part rubber bonded jobby, they come apart so the bets can spin freey of the crankshaft, the noise maybe it spinning/gripping. its really hard to see,but sometimes the bets can be spun.

When I bought mine a few years ago it had an noise from the front which sounded like the alternator but I found it to be the idle pulley / adjuster pulley for the air conditioning.
Got a bearing for it local for about three pounds. Just worth a look.

Not really had a chance to look further into the noise from Billy, but it is still there.

Tonight I took the cover off and had a poke around.

None of the belts moved by hand.
None of the wheels seem to be able to move, apart from the cam belt tensioner wheel had a tiny bit of play.
The two belts to the alternator seem to have more slack than the others, but not much.
The airconditioning unit (i think it is) is the only item I can move the front of by hand. (note air con has never seemed to work)

Here is a boring video of me playing with the belts.

Then with the engine running I videoed around the area.
Could the two belts that are shaking a bit be the noise?
Is this normal?

(sorry for shaky camera work.. difficult on your back, with light and camera)

So to conclude the thread... it was the alternator.

Took the belts off and spun it by hand... same grinding noise.

Order a replacement alternator from bongo spares, also bought 2 new alternator belts as I thought I would change them at the same time.
Replacing alternator is reasonably easy..
Replacing the belts isn't! Had to take air con belt off to get the others off, and it is very tight around there..

Anyway, billy is purring again so all is well :D
