Steering wheel swap Horn problems

Post by meek.tv » Wed Jun 25, 2014 8:40 am

I did mention this in pimp but I thought here may be a better place to ask...

I have swapped my old steering wheel (non-airbag) for an rx8 steering wheel but I can't work out how to make the horn work.
I have removed the airbag firing unit but I don't think that is the problem.

On both the original wheel and a momo wheel/boss combo I tried recently, it looks like the horn button is grounded via the boss itself but the rx8 wheel has a connection for the steering wheel controls, it looks to me like the wheel is grounded via this connection block.

Does anyone have an idea what I need to do to get the horn working (based on my vague description) ?

here's a rubbish picture, I'm almost certain that the red cable attached to the wheel is the horn wire

I've got one of those wheels waiting to be fitted, but I got the squib/clockspring unit to go with it as I want to use the cruise control switches. You will need to modify the collar for the indicator self-cancelling mechanism too so have a search on the forum for more details of what's involved. It's not a straight swap.

the indicator cancelling seems to work fine as it is, straight swap. I didn't need the clockspring because of the no-airbag situation
It feels a lot nicer than the standard 90's plastic one it has to be said....just need to sort the horn :(

looking at it again I think I would need the clockspring, I'm going to have to jimmy something to make the horn work or try and get my hands on one

The red cable has to be the horn (99% sure)

the small spring on the right hand side is the horn connection to the steering wheel, but the rx8 wheel doesn't make contact with this without the clockspring attached.

this is off the old wheel but it's too big to fit to the rx8 wheel without some cleverness, I'll have to see if I can make it work somehow :S
