No air from blowers :(

Post by Idris » Sat Jun 21, 2014 12:35 pm

1996 - Manual Aircon

I have no air (at all) comming out of any vents :(

The blower fan works - and yes it spins the right way (even conected it up in reverse to check) - it's not the recirculation, I've even tried removing that.

Under the dash the controls are conected to the various flaps and sound like they are moving the doors on the inside - tried all positions - double checked that the control vs the position of the bellcrank (the plastic thingy at the bottom end of the rod) do what they are supposed to.

Any ideas? before I start taking all the heater/aircon/dash apart?

Hi
If everything is working as it should, I should take the heater motor out, and clean the matrix behind it...they get absolutely clogged with muck...I'm afraid that even when you have thoroughly cleaned, they're not as powerful as some other cars , but they do work very well...even over here!
Cheers

Helen I think you are right - a right pig of a job, loads of plugs 10mm bolts and screws - and even with everything undone it's only partial access

So far tried vacuum cleaner with various things attached to it - fine when you can get right up against the face, but only the rear and the upper part of the front - emptied half a can of contact cleaner through it, going to try Leoclean next.

A little affraid to use brake cleaner?

Could always resort to the slow method of poking a wire through it - will have to find something relatively soft to avoid punching holes in the matrix

Any other bright ideas?

If it was the heater rather than the AC martix I could (ok with a lot of effort) remove it from the car and clean it under a tap ;)

Is it just a problem when "Hot" is selected ? is it OK on "Cold"

If on both I would not think the matrix would be your problem, more likely in the region of the flaps (Mixing flap possibly) or a Squirrels built its nest in there

This system does not use water control valves they use diverter/mixer flaps.

Good Luck.

Helen, the AC matrix was dirty but not the main problem

teenmal didn't make any difference hot or cold.

The real problem

ImageBlowing by Idris_Ddraig, on Flickr

No blow, sucking a bit - solved, somewhat by reversing the power and making the fan spin backwards

ImageFan-Rotation by Idris_Ddraig, on Flickr

Red is the efficient direction for this fan? But due to the shape of the housing it only blows in the blue direction

ImageFan-location by Idris_Ddraig, on Flickr

The fan lives in here, can somone please take this photo (on a bongo with a working blower) so I can see if my fan is wrong

ImageNon-Standard by Idris_Ddraig, on Flickr

This (to me at least) looks like a non standard istalation, and looks like somone has partially buchered the plastic to make it fit - the back of the motor doesn't fit it's cover properly either :(

Hi
Sorry, but I can't remember what the installation looks like un-butchered...I usually take it all apart every year and tooth-brush it, and blow it through the matrix with an air-line. I'm busy tomorrow, or I'd take mine down an look for you...Maybe I might just pull the front off and I think I'll be able to answer?
I'm off to bed now (different time-zone, and I'm up for the dogs at 5.00 A.M.) , so I'll be back later!
Cheers

From you pic I would say that someone has fitted the wrong fan, on a clockwise fan leading edge should be concave.

Hi
I've just looked at the fan in my Bongo (just removed the scoop only), and it looks like someone has fitted a fan with the cupped portion facing the wrong way....namely, as teenmal suggests, the rotation should be clockwise, and you have an anti-clockwise fan.
The front and the rear heater fans LOOK similar, but I wonder if they are essentially different, and someone has fitted a rear fan?....
My thoughts would be to get a new fan ...George at Bongospares2012 on e-Bay is the "main man" for spares...give him a shout...at least you'll know that the fan's O.K. Then blast the matrices with an air-line....
Once the heating / cooling is sorted, it's perfectly adequate!
Cheers
