Coolant loss !

Post by Andy12 » Tue Jun 17, 2014 11:06 pm

Ok earlier this evening i heard the voice of corporal Jones - don't panic, easily said than done when your not sure if it is smoke or steam that is filling your cab. Needless to say pull into side of road and jump out and stand well back. Well thankfully not smoke so no toasted Bongo but a dripping of water coming from the plastic shield under the central area of the vehicle. I checked the rad and it was cold but the top hose was hot (new rad fitted last year by previous owner) so allowed to cool then filled with water and drove home, no knocking or banging noises and drove home fine. So being new to these vehicles where should i start looking first or should i just get it booked in somewhere, only owned it for two and a half weeks and last week found out it needs 5-600 pounds worth of welding for mot and now this.

£600 of welding! What needs doing? How much did you pay for the Bongo? Where are you based?

Hi guys, 1st is good news - top hose, now to try and find one, just being informed by local Mazda dealer on back order so who knows  .

2nd, crossmember needs plating and the sills need replacing but having being under i can see either side level with the bottom of the doors but not had a good look round yet.

I'm aware the club shop might have stock but could do with it back on the road for Saturday evening as i'm helping out with the local hospice charity walk.

Lets hope you didn't do any damage by driving it home after refilling it, unless, of course, you carried out the bleeding procedure at the side of the road before you drove it. If the level ever drops below the bottom of the header tank you should never drive it without bleeding it because you will have some significant air pockets which could cause overheating and head gasket damage (or worse).

Dore service station close to Sheffield who are known on here have supplied a used part to get me back on the road =D> , do for now and will contact the shop next week to sort a new part so that's one result today. As for bleeding it i'm aware of the bleed nipple under the passenger seat.

But are you aware of the procedure? There is a video on here somewhere showing the process that you need to follow.

Hi again, yes i watched the procedure first and then took the ipad outside so i could keep looking at it but Tony the workshop manager from Dore service station also said i could call him and he would go over it with me on the phone whilst doing it. I'm sorry if this is the wrong area but i must say hat's of to the guys there they are really helpful =D> , especially in the days where it seems to be everyman for themselves. Anyway let it warm up and open the stat and fan the fan kicked in and then drove it for 12 miles, no problems the gauge sat at 1/4 to a 1/3 and did not move from there so hopefully job done and no serious damage [-o< .

Hmmm, can't sills be plated? £600 still sounds a lot unless it' involved work.
