Front Washer Pump Fix - Share a Coke, Share a Smile

Post by Mark Elvin » Tue Jun 03, 2014 9:49 am

when we bought the Bongo we noticed that the rear washer switch operated the front washer & the front washer switch did not do anything.

I suspected that the front pump had at some point given up the ghost & the previous owner had switched the pipes over at the washer pump end.

Last night I stripped down the washer bottle assy & tested the wiring, all good. When I tested the front motor, nothing. I removed the red cap (acts as the motor brush holder) & it was full of chod. It was jammed solid, so, remembering what Coke does to a dirty coin & soaked the pump in the aforementioned sugary drink for a few hours. The amount of junk that dissolved away was staggering, and the pump rotated freely. Gave the whole thing a good rinse in clean water & dried, BINGO, fully operating motor.

Saved myself £25 & acquired a sense of achievement.

Did you have to re-grease any of it?

There is a thread here, too... http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43&t=53521.

I need to look at my rear - it wasn't pumping last time I tried.

Not £25.

£4.85 (I agree, it is a great sense of achievement, and I'm all for mending things instead of replacing them - but in this case....)

You can use this for both pumps. The top one will require you to cut off the plug on the loom and crimp on 2 spade terminals. The bottom one is a direct plug in replacement. They both are the same dimensions and performance, one outlet points the opposite way to the original, but that makes zero difference.

A word of advice. I have removed and cleaned, and greased both pumps when they failed. The top one once, the bottom one twice. Then I just replaced them. All within 12 months. Once they start to go, they seem to be prone to going again fairly soon. I guess an internal seal fails. For under a tenner to do both it worth it, if nothing else, just to save removing the battery tray every time!
