Help - rear heater matrix bypass

Hi All

I've read through some of the other threads regarding bypassing the rear matrix but I'm having a bit of trouble identify routes on my V6.

Is it simply a case of connecting this from the drivers side (first photo I'VE GOT THE TITLES WRONG WAY ROUND THOUGH)

Shows a hose pushed on to rusty pipe/T-piece - wondering if hose probably too narrow its 16mm bore - should it be 18mm

and routed round back of engine over gearbox to this metal pipe on passenger side (disconnecting the section of rubber hose which joins the two metal pipes shown

Any help very much gratefully received - both my cars are off the road with cooling system problems :(

I bypassed mine at the rear just below the rear of the drivers seat as you can see in my picture on this thread, but my metal pipework was not as rusty as yours looks. You can bypass it under the passenger seat too.

I used 16mm radiator hose and replaced everything from 61-213A to the T-piece with it. I also replaced the 15mm copper t-piece "fix" that was there with a 16mm plastic one designed for coolant systems as well as the hose from the engine down to it (61-213).

I didn't bypass the rear heater, but it could easily be done this way, making the job simpler. Not certain my coolant system is completely leak free as I only did the final piece of this last week and am still monitoring levels. However, it is certainly better than it was.



(edit) Note this was a 2.5TD not a V6. Hopefully the pipework to the rear heaters are similar though.

I did see both of your previous postings but just a little nervous having not fully followed through the schematics in my haste to get things done. I think the position of the bleed hose in the pictures you had received by another member confused me too - I thought I was looking toward the front of the van :oops: !

I have bought some 16mm inner bore hose but it is a rather tight fit - it goes on but you can see the hose form the shape of the spigot if you know what I mean and I wonder if this could put undue stress on the hose when under pressure thereby causing it to rupture.

So I bought some 19mm but this is way to big and the hose kinks too - but as I cannot find any 18mm I think the 16mm will have to do.

Yes Simon I was a little shocked at the state of my pipework and always marvel at the condition of your van - I wish I could keep on top of mine as well as you obviously do. Did you simply connect a short piece of hose (and can you remember what bore etc.) ? I thought I'd read in another post that you had made up connections using metal pipework to avoid kinks in the hose or am I mistaking this with a posting by someone else ? I did try to route the hose between the two pipes but it kinked so will probably go the one side of the van to the other route.

The original hoses on mine bulged showing the metal shape to which they were connected. They were REALLY tight and a complete &*^*&*&* to get off. In both your pictures you can see the original hoses bulge at the joins too.

Right gents thanks for the advice - all done and dusted (well ... bled and run round the block a couple of times, fingers crossed it'll be good for a good while !).

The piece of pipe I used was a spare U shaped one which is normally found on the drivers side of the diesel engine by the starter motor. Just happened to have a spare engine lying around (as you do :) ). I chose that as it was the right inside diameter and already had the bend so I didn't have to worry about it kinking.

Glad you have got it sorted now anyway.

Neat job :). Have you since added a jubilee clip to the end that fits over the rusty T-piece? I can't see one in the photo.

EDIT: got it - it's on the photo where the pipe looks less rusty :)

Thanks Simon - I cleaned up the pipe and gave it a lick of paint - temp job really and will revisit to do a proper job soon. I need to get under the van and tidy a few other things up too.
