Turbo Whistle / scream

Post by CKC100 » Wed May 14, 2014 8:29 pm

Hi folks,
I have noticed on my bongo that from 2000 revs to 3000 revs my turbo whistle is more like a scream which seems to have come about after a real long trip away of about 500 miles.
It doesn't scream when just reving, but only under light load on the road, just wondering if anyone else has had it as well?
It still has loads of power right through the range and it isn't smokey.
Cheers folks.

Is it like a slipping fan belt squealing sound? If so, I would suggest you check out the no. 1 exhaust manifold stud.

Buy that man a pint!!! Right on the money, just went and whipped of the exhaust shield to find it a bit black round number one cylinder and the lower bolt tightened by two turns although it was tight and tried it on the road and it is almost back to its old self again.
Thank you for the advice!!
Cheers Charlie

You were very lucky as the stud tend to snap off, so hopefully yours has just worked loose. The whistling noise is caused by the gases blowing past the metal gasket.

Yes totally understand where the noise was coming from now, never even entered my mind it being the manifold at the time, but I did do a lot of motorway miles where she was running sweet at around 80 for long periods so can see the constant vibs could cause it to loosen.

Think I will stick a new timing belt on it before the summer so I can check out the other nuts and bolts under the covers!
