Servicing, Puddles and Heat Sensor V6
Hello All
My first time to the Forum I hope you can help on a number of matters.
1. Servicing - here in Wiltshire I am tryng to get my beloved Bongo serviced (full) quotes coming in between £200 (autospeed), £200-£250 (Bell Hill Motors) and £250 Keith Lyle - is this the going rate?
2. Puddles/heat sensor - discovered this winter that she doesn't like puddles and stalls/loses all power either in it or just after it - which was a tad dangerous on more than one occasion. After being left for about 5-10 mins she would start again but after doing this on the 3rd occasion the heat light came on the dashboard. At first it was intermittent and then it stayed on. She also seems to misfire/is sluggish and labours between gears. Advice welcomes to try and focus garages attention and keep costs down. Service might well have to wait in favour of these works.

'heat light' suggests diesel engine, but they don't usually mind puddles at all. Prices seem ok but what do they include? Bell Hill are well known and thought of on here. I'd opt for them and get their view on the various problems. Good luck and keep us posted.Teskey144 wrote:Hello All

It sounds like you have a petrol vehicle,if so check the Lambda wiring/distributor cap seal/plug leads/ignitor connection etc etc.
Ypu may save some money by letting your garage do the work.

Thanks, she is a petrol V6 engine and I have noticed there is exposed wiring beneath the chassis.

Some petrol models have two sensors on the exhaust: heat sensor & lambda. They will all have the lambda sensor but the heat sensor seems to be less common. My V6 doesn't have one & there is no sign that one was ever fitted
There are a number of threads on the forum regarding V6's cutting out after going thru a puddle (worth a search to find them). A few possible causes include: moisture in the dizzy cap, around the HT leads & the crank position sensor which is quite exposed at the front on the engine (seen here to the right of the pulley)

The heat sensor hasn't come up in relationship to the stalling problem before, but it would make sense as it will be right in the firing line for large puddles.
V6 ignition leads do deteriorate with time, so its probably worth investing in all 7 & if you can afford it, go for genuine Mazda as some folk have had issues with the cheaper copies. For servicing & repairs, try Discount Trucks in Newbury who are more familiar with V6's than most Bongo garages.

Hi, I have 2 V6 bongos and have never experienced cutting out after running through water. If the vehicle is fairly new to you are you sure that the tray under the engine is present? I can imagine that without the tray in place the engine could easily be drenched with water causing misfire. I've driven in some extremely wet conditions without problems. I can recommend the investment in a new set of HT leads as they do seam to suddenly start to break down rapidly once they start to go. And a new set works wonders with resprct to smoother running.

Agree with the previous poster that my V6 is pretty robust on puddles. This year there have been some real lakes around. So far I have managed as the Bongo is fairly high.
Compared to a diesel the electrics are more vulnerable on a V6 with the dizzy cap behind the radiators at the front. I had a problem with this with the carbon finger inside the dizzy cap worn away resulting in a gap in damp conditions to large for the spark to jump. Result a Bongo that did not start on damp, rainy days. A new dizzy cap cured this one. Checking the under tray is present is a good point.
The heat sensor is not essential on a V6, as newer ones do not have this. It or the light bulb can be removed.

What does a tray look like or should it be obvious?
Had her for 2 years but this been the first winter she has had a problem with water -not sure why.
Will pop out now and check.

Here's one. It's in two parts screwed together & I've seen it before where the front section is missing & this is the bit that protects the front of the engine around the crankshaft position sensor.

Yep got one of those.
Going to book it in to a garage in Melksham (Keith Lye) now. Fingers crossed it won't be too pricey.

hi there.
i have had bongo for 4 years now and over the last 5 month have had the same problems with puddles. problem is hard to replicate. we have tray etc. have checked dissy cap. no apparent problems. sprayed up everything with wd40 still problem. we have even had engine running and srayed water all over everything. from under and top with seats out to see if we could get electrics to arche out but nothing.
will be talking to ads next time the van is in to see what they think.
any advise would be good
