Door mirror gone bananas
Parked up earlier this evening in a narrow road, wound the mirrors in, nearside one nested correctly but offside one started leaping about all over the place with a lot of noise.
Only way to switch it off was with the ignition key. It was dark and I had no idea which fuse to pull. Eventually managed to end up with it stopped fully extended but closing it by hand, which is normally possible started it running again uncontrollably. I have stopped it again with both mirrors extended but can't remember how I achieved that!
I'm paranoid whenever I see a white tranny coming towards me down a narrow street and always wind the mirrors in. Now I am likely to retract it by hand and end up with it going bananas until I can pull up safely and sort it out.
Anyone had a similar occurrence? I'm guessing it's a limit switch fault rather than a loom fault, however it is much noisier than usual which is probably an indication of bigger trouble. If it has a unique fuse I will probably just pull that and move it in by hand until I've got time to take it apart.

P.S. If The Bongomaster is reading this, it would seem to be my punishment for tardy renewal!

Re: Door mirror gone bananas
Sounds like the mirror itself, just replaced my drivers side (different fault it wouldn't retract). If you wanted to make sure before buying another one you could take of both door cards, remove both mirrors and temporary connect the NS to the off side to see if it behaves (the connectors are the same both sides) one word of warning though if it is faulty make sure you get one with 5 wires not 3 from a breakers yard. Three wires = electric, five wires =electric folding. I made that mistake

Re: Door mirror gone bananas
Thanks, elbee, I will check the model if it comes to the stage of going to the breakers.
Took the door card off yesterday and removed the mirror enclosure for diagnosis but couldn't work out how to remove the mirror itself, without risking breaking it, in order to get at the motor, which appears to be running but slipping.
I've put it back on the door with its feed disconnected so I can still use the nearside one remotely while folding the offside one manually through the open window when necessary. Just hope my window winds down before white van man gets me in a narrow lane!
While at it, I waggled everything to do with the electric window and appear to have improved its reliability. There was some evidence of corrosion in the connectors rather than any problem with the loom. The unknown quantity in that equation is the reliability of the 'one touch' electronics.
meanwhile, back with the mirror, time now to spend part of a wet Easter Sunday going through old posts on dismantling the mirror. The motor is running but the drive is slipping and the limit switch is either not working or not being reached.

Mirror glass just pops out with gentle leverage.

I will try a little harder tomorrow!Simon Jones wrote:Mirror glass just pops out with gentle leverage.
I just wondered if there is one edge it is better to start from. As with most things to do with car trim, it becomes obvious after you've broken the end with the moulded on hooks instead of the bend to release thingy.

If I can remember where I put them, I've got a pair of mirrors with the glass removed which I'll try to take a photo of tomorrow.

Re: Door mirror gone bananas
I've had this problem - caused by a broken shaft mounting I think in the plastic mirror moulding. Managed to fix it but the fix didn't last. Getting the mirror glass out was a bit scary I seem to recall doing it in the end using a very large sucker purchased from a camping shop and intended for use in sticking an awning pole to a caravan (or whatever!) It had a good stub for gripping it then pulling.

If it helps and it turns out you need a new one I bought mine from this seller. It was £45 delivered for the folding electric one. His name is George he was very helpful.
