replacing piston rings

Post by redalan1971 » Fri Apr 11, 2014 8:42 am

Can someone with an engine manual inform me of the specified ring gap and conrod bolt torque figures.
I am going to replace the piston rings and head following a recent failure.

It would be a wise investment to buy the manual anyway for such a major rebuild. It tells you all the torque values and settings for everything you will be taking off & refitting. It also has lots of diagrams that will come in useful when figuring out where all the bits go.

I wouldn't have thought the rings need gapping if you have got the correct size.

They may not need gapping, but they certainly need checking.

These rings will be fitted to a unknown OS cylinder bore.

I have checked my bores with a dial bore gauge and they are all within limits so I going to hone the bores and then fit new standard rings. The ring gap should always be checked when fitting new rings as if there is insufficient clearance for expansion increased wear or seizure may occur. Workshop manuals normally list the gap required I have one on CD ROM somewhere but can't find the bloody thing when I need it.

Does this help....If you still don't know the con rod torque let me know and I will try and check it for you.

Piston diameter measured at 90° to pin bore axis and
Standard 92.951—92.977 {3.6595—3.6605}
at 90 to in bore axis and 19.0 mm {0.75} above the bottom of piston
0.25 {0.01} oversize 93.186—93.212 {3.6688—3.6697}
Piston bottom of piston
(mm {in}) 0.50 {0.02} oversize 93.436—93.462 {3.6786—3.6795}
Clearance between piston and Standard 0.038—0.056 {0.0015—0.0022} cylinder (mm {in}) Maximum 0.150 {0.0059}
Top 0.06—0.10 {0.0024—0.0039} Clearance between piston ring Second 0.04—0.08 {0.0016—0.0031} g and ring groove (mm {in}) Oil 0.03—0.07 {0.0012—0.0027}
Piston ring
Maximum 0.150 {0.0059}
