Wont run for long after fuel filter change

Post by Dodgey » Fri Mar 21, 2014 2:45 pm

I changed the fuel filter and check the banjo. Now, she starts and runs for a short while - lump. Then dies completely and requires about 10 seconds of cranking to get going again. Only to repeat the same over and over. She'll sit ticking over, but when I rev her, after 20 or so seconds - dead again. Any idea?

Clean the banjo filter again as it's possible new filter has some loose bits from the element which have washed downstream to the injector pump. Did both copper washers go back on the banjo so there is an airtight seal?

There were washers between the female fixing and the engine. They stayed in place. I'll go check the banjo again now....

It will tick over seemingly forever, as soon as I rev her - she complies, then dies shortly afterwards.

Will report back in a sec...

Washers are where they should be (one under the bolt head, one under the round female fixing), banjo clean. I'm starting to consider putting the old fuel filter back on..... I only changed it as a service item

Got it - didn't replace the bottom rubber "o" ring below the fuel filter - between it and the white plastic float holder

That would make sense as the pump would be sucking in air rather than diesel. Glad you got it sorted.

Yeah - had me well confused. Out of interest - why does fuel starvation cause clouds of smoke?

Don't know for sure. On my XC70, I was getting loads of black smoke when the intercooler blew which resulted in incorrect air/fuel mixture. Popped a new I/C in (no mean feat when its sandwiched between the air con & cooling radiators) & problem went away.
