New glow plugs, battery and non-return valve fitted. Still nothing doing. Managed to get to talk to the mechanic rather than reporting through the office so that I could list all the symptoms. ( the office had just told him 'trouble starting') it now has an additional pump fitted under the drivers seat which runs all the time. Starts every time & Running like a dream. And I'm now getting used to the tic-tic-tic noise!

That's a novel workaround to a faulty injection pump. Have you got a photo of what has been done?

As fitting a pump has cured the problem it points to the front seal as NB has said, however another possibility is a partially blocked tank filter....

Had similar problem last year, changed plugs, local garage found fuel pipes brittle, changed pipes and o-ring on joining unit, all Ok now .

The fuel lines should be inspected and changed every 4 years although it's one area of servicing that pretty much everyone tends to overlook.
