The light will also contain some electronic gubbins that ups the voltage to light the old tube just disconect the feed to this
Good point winchman, forgot to mention I took out the board with the 'gubbins' on and connected directly to the incoming wires. The little led discs have their own gubbins.

Also, at the risk of being quoted the ol' egg-sucking metaphor. The leds will only work one way round, so make sure you solder them all up the same way. (If you should wire them up backwards, they won't blow, just not work - apparently  )
Reality looks interesting from this distance.

Has anyone considered another alternative to the tubes
ie cold cathode tubes
eg
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sharkoon-10cm ... _Decals&ha
typicaly advertised for pc cases but come in various colours for the pimp brigade.

they are used in work for lighting insides of production equipment and give off good light.
down side the 12" used in work (bought off ebay) have crap inverters and are put on life test before use and are replaced by maplin product. Now this may be batch related

That last paragraph was just info and not definitive advice
would 4" or 6" fit?

You could do the same as Sparticus with the light you already have as you are just re-using the casing and diffuser to house the new LEDs. No point spending money on a new light and then ripping the guts out.

I suspect the Red wire on the board is the +12 volts,
The White wire is most likely 0v,
Grey is the switched ground to choose permanent on or Door switch on, so connect the +ve of the LEDs to Red and the -ve LED to Grey on the board, throw the board itself away.
Just to say that the colour codes within modules can vary and don't necessarily match the loom colours.

Interestingly mikexgough has spotted these tubes http://www.amazon.co.uk/225mm-LED-Tube- ... uctDetails that are suggested as direct replacements. They appear to use the mains voltage via the normal choke in the fitting, however whether or not the little invertor is capable of handling the different load types will be interesting to see!
