alternator belt sqeek

the alternator belt is not slipping but on tick over there is a slight wine which pulses in unison with the diesel knock....if you know what i mean

its hard to describe... and put into words but if the tick over goes bruum bruum bruum bruum.......then the wine goes eech eech eech eech.

the belts are in good condition but that's not to say they are not contaminated.

its hard to make judgement but it may be belts too tight or loose....i have no idea.

has anyone had this on their van....any ideas?

Did it start since the oil change etc. today?

no, it started doing it about six months after buying it.

it stopped once when it was serviced so i wonder if its a bit of lube on the belts sorted it out for a bit.

da bongo suggested a spray with a bit of wd40 to see of its the belts. as i told debongo i also replaced the wipers with new Bosch ones as the old ones were squeaking too, the rubber was dried out.

it made me wonder if the engine had been cleaned with truck wash or gunk which does tend to strip the life out of rubber.

I remember it being said that WD40 did the trick. My old Nissan Sunny squeaked for years but I didnt have Bongo Forum to set me right - never broke the belt though!

Could it be the dreaded No;1 cylinder manifold stud ? This is often described as making a squeaking noise and being in time with the engine revs would fit in with that.

not this time im pleased to say.......dabongo is the winner

i had it digging in the back of my mind bugging me....so I had to go out in the rain and try the wd40 trick.

I only knew it worked because an old mechanic I used to know many years ago whilst servicing My mk 2 Escort commented on how noisy the belts were on it.
He promptly got a can of WD 40 out and said "Just listen to this" a quick spray but not a drenching in it took away all the hissing/squeaking noise and made it very quiet.I was well impressed and being only 17 at the time it just stuck in My mind.Little did I know that I would be using it on a Bongo getting on for 30 yrs later.Mine started doing the hissing noise described by Cezeta a few weeks ago a quick spray and Hey Presto silence!

WD40 is funny stuff, I once read of an experiment where friction was tested using WD40 and a steel block on an incline. WD40 on it's own decreased the friction from the dry state, but adding oil actually increased the friction over what it was with WD40 alone.

In the Model Engineer mag it was.

Well thats it then, conclusive evidence3, it appears that if your alternator belt is slipping and squeaking just spray it with WD40.

Are there any other spray can cures? Slipping clutch maybe, juddering brakes, weak headlights, worn tyres, loud radio, sloppy shock absorbers, noisy exhaust -let us know it will save £'sss and hours of work

Not if it's slipping vanmaneric....just tighten it! WD40 is just to quieten it from the "scuffing" noise.
