2l petrol - cam belt/tensioner broken & Hampshire garages?

Post by sdsk » Sat Mar 08, 2014 9:56 pm

Hi,
Our 2l petrol bongo came to a halt today - recovery guy suspects the cam belt tensioner has gone as the belt was intact but loose on pulley.
I've read that the 2l engine might just survive such things - I certainly hope that's the case (I'm after some reassurance here guys)!

Is investigating and fixing this a job any reasonable garage could undertake, or would it need one more familiar with bongos?

If the latter, can anyone recommend a bongo savvy garage near Southampton that would be up for this please?

I know of a place in Eastleigh, but never heard from anyone that's used them.

Thanks a lot!!

If you mean Master Tech Autos, I've not used them myself but they do all the work for Southern Bongos and there are always 2 or 3 in the workshop when I drive last every week.

When did you last have the cambelt and tensioner changed?

If you are at the Andover end of Test Valley, there is Discount Trucks near Highclear. They are the best Bongo specialists in the South and would certainly be able to deal with any problems on a petrol Bongo. Gerry and Fred are both very knowledgeable and helpful. Gerry has his own petrol Bongo now anyway. I have used them for the last six years and they are highly recommended by club members.

Master Tech are great and reasonably priced for servicing and I use them for this and MOTs. Very friendly and have a courtesy car. Also close to the station/buses to get home/work if not! They couldn't find the problem with my electrical issues though.

Hi the tensioner bolt may have just come loose. The belt could have jumped. There are some notes on here I have put up.

Cam belt supposedly new when we bought the bongo 3 years ago.

No idea about the tensioner ..... I've always had them changed together on previous vehicles.

Thanks for the Newbury Discount truck recommendations too!
We're in Romsey, so a bit of a trek, but might be worth it for good service.

Does anyone know for sure if the 2.0l (FE) engine is an non-interference design?

(edit: The 2.0l timing belt fact sheet in the members area might prove useful!

Thanks again

Discount Trucks phone number 01635254185. Give them a phone call. Gerry and Fred are really helpful. I was up there today having a service on my V6. New set of filters and off for another summer.

When I had brake failure last summer, unknown cause, they did a fantastic job of reconditioning the whole system.

Well, it seems the cam belt itself had broken, nothing to do with the tensioner.

Keith from Kservices certainly knows his way around a Bongo (and has the workshop manuals).
He got a new belt on this morning and all seems well.

So it seems the 2.0l petrol engine doesn't self-destruct if the cam belt breaks.

It does, however, make me doubt that the belt was changed by the importer, a mere 3 years and 10k miles ago.

It's good to have the Bongo back!

Good result, glad you're sorted.

Unless you have proper official invoice to show cambelt has been changed by previous owner, it's always safe to assume it has not been done. A certain ebay seller in the Bristol region has been hand-writing invoices to suggest that cambelts have been changed, but it has been shown to be fraudulent when the buyer contacted the previous owner who verified the back-dated invoice was not present when he handed the vehicle over to the ebay seller.

BTW - have you got any further details please for KServices as that link doesn't seem to work? It's always handy to have someone in our region who knows is way around a Bongo.
