steering oddity
Hi folks,
On Thursday we went through our MOT (192k km) with not a problem.
Today, when driving in to London to visit family (90 min run), I noticed steering intermittently going from normal to 'heavy' (as if no power assistance) and then back again.
Popping the bonnet I have PS fluid at maximum.
Any other obvious checks / known issues / solutions? And, is it likely to be a major problem in the journey home later today?
Many thanks for any advice!
Gavin.

Actually. Just realised what I checked was brake fluid. Will pop out and check PS after lunch, though certain it was OK 3 or 4 days ago.

Thanks (sorry, on mobile phone, hard to search!). So, should be fine until we get home then, and shall clean and lubricate appropriately!

Re: steering oddity
You can try...open front bonnet and follow steering rod down, you will see a cv joint, I gave this a good blast with hose first to get rid of any muck, then a good spray with maintenance fluid and spray grease, did the trick for me and been fine since, worth a go.
Re: steering oddity
Thanks,
After lunch I found the actual PS fluid reservoir (fine), removed top, started engine and moved lock to lock a couple of times (kind of hissing sound at full lock? I assume normal?) couldn't attend to CV joint where I was but will have a look in daylight later this week and give it a clean and some lubrication. However, no return of symtoms crawling out of London, on M25 (that I noticed) nor the country lanes of home.

Re: steering oddity
This does cure ours. Though just had to do again after a year with no probs. we use wd40 first then a motorcycle chain oil. Not sure if this joint is worn or if is jus a build up of muck and grease or both.David Edwards wrote:You can try...open front bonnet and follow steering rod down, you will see a cv joint, I gave this a good blast with hose first to get rid of any muck, then a good spray with maintenance fluid and spray grease, did the trick for me and been fine since, worth a go.

The universal joints (UJ) dry up and bind, its also worth lubricating the other (UJ) in the cab.
Re: steering oddity
Cleaned and lubricated both joints, and lo and behold steering is all normal once again. Thanks all!
