Non Starter

Post by Blueskai » Mon Feb 17, 2014 5:28 pm

Hello. It's been a while.

I decided to blank off the EGR and remove some of the pipes and gubbins. Now I can't start the thing.
It was working fine yesterday after I had removed the bits, bit somehow now it won't start.

It turns over and some white smoke appears from the back but it won't fire up.
Glow plug light comes on and goes off, I've tried this a few times to get them warm too.

Are there any other pipes associated with the EGR that I need to blank off or remove?

Any help appreciated

have you blanked it off using the very good plates from allans vehicle services of plymouth.??
what have you removed, if you have removed the egr valve or the controlling solenoids have you blanked the vac pipe that feeds them, this is important as it is the same common vac supply that operates the cold start solenoids.

check to see if you have snapped the 10mm pipe that goes from the inlet manifold to the top of the fuel pump, this controls the pump advance.

check you have voltage at the glow plug rail.

The charge at the relay is OK. The pipe is intact. I have now replaced all the pipes and wired the EGR system back up, although it is still blanked off.

It feels like no fuel is getting through although there is a little smoke when turning it over.. Could too much air have entered the fuel system or is there no pressure at the pump?

It is frustrating as I had it working a treat before I went to bed. The 10mm pipe you mentioned was left unconnected during that time, if that makes much different.

I think it may be just a simple fix needed to get the fire back in her belly.

The first things that I would check are, the fuel is in fact reaching the injectors by slackening off the delivery pipe at the injectors.

It could be a stop solenoid fault or even filter problem.

Or it might be needing a drink.

Thank you
I was considering this, but not done it before. Do i loosen it and check if it weeps on starting?
Also Where is the fuel stop solenoid located?

What year your Bongo?
The later drive by wire ones have more solenoids and a vacuum reservoir under the passenger seat side which should be left alone. These operate the turbo but you could be losing vacuum if you have disconnected them.

No you should see a a high pressure stream of fuel at this point, protect your eyes.If it weeps it needs a wee bit of comforting. :)

UPDATE

I have discovered the problem. THREE of the new glow plugs I put in are dead. That can't be normal can it?. They were cheap plugs, which may be the answer, but I have only driven the van once or twice since replacing them last month.

I checked the voltage and 12 at the battery went to less than 2 at the plug!! Does this point at a bigger problem.
I will replace the plugs with a proper NGK set first of all.

A wee tip is, check/test the heaters before you install them.

How is it possible for all of the plugs to fail?. I replaced like for like, they are CP-60 11v plugs (longer ones). Is it most likely to be just crap plugs or is there another explanation?.

The van had worked ever since I replaced them and they only stopped working when I blanked off the EGR.

Also, I salvaged one of the old plugs that I took out last month and managed to start the van up first time.

What plugs are recommended for a longer lifespan?

Is there any possibility they were damaged when you blanked the EGR? They contain a ceramic element and a big enough whack could fracture it.

Its possible, Ive seen a pack of 10 that are all duff, when it comes to components, always best to check before installation.
