Steering wheel removal

Post by Spencer54 » Thu Feb 06, 2014 10:21 pm

One of the kind chaps on the RX8 forum has given me a steering wheel to try.
How do you get the air bag equipped bongo one off safely?

Make sure it's an air bag type wheel going back on as they are not compatible and your insurers won't accept a non air bag on air bag equipped vehs also mot failure.if it's comp disconnect battery and let it rest for half hour ,remove blankets from rear of wheel remove screws then air lifts off then unplug from trigger ring ,slacken wheel nut a few turns then pull towards you with a toggling motion once wheel slackened remove nut fully this wil avoid you losing TEETH!you will also have to remove the shrouds

My DIY skills would stop me from attempting to change an air bag wheel, but good luck.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

Many thanks I'll let you know how I get on - hopefully not from the waiting line in the dentists :D

Many thanks, steering wheel off is a doddle.
So as before plugs out of rear of wheel, disconnect earth strap, remove 4x10mm bolts and airbag comes off.
Top tip was to press the horn button as it empties the capacitor instantly - I did belt and braces.
Unclip both electrical connectors and the 21mm socket has the nut off.
Gentle wiggle and its clear.

Clock spring is on 3x Phillips screws and the whole shebang is out.

That and the RX8 one appears to go on as well - double result.

Thanks for the update, might be worth a sticky or Fact Sheet. :)
