Excessive play in wiper arms

Hallo to all on the forum - I'm very pleased to meet you. I recently acquired a 2000 2.0l petrol tin top - and the whole family is delighted with it! It's perfect for carting around a family of six. We do like our Japanese imports - our previous bus was a '96 Toyota Estima.

Anyway, there is just one issue so far - there is excessive play in the front wipers. I found a couple of historic posts on this problem, including a very handy parts diagram, but I am still a little unclear on the solution.

To correct this, would you say I need a new wiper motor, or new linkage rods ... or both?

Hi all, happy new year.

I just attempted to replace the wiper link rods, but had a problem. The bolt circled in red in the diagram below rotates as I turn the nut. Access to the underside is extremely limited ... any hints on how I can keep the bolt still and remove the nut?

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has a nugget of advice about this. I think I'm going to have to drill out the rusty bolt on Saturday and thread a new one of similar size through the plastic casing. I am a little concerned that this approach will affect operation of the wipers, so other views are very welcome before the weekend!

get the nut off anyway you can, like grinding or drilling. they usually snap off so you are unlucky

then the unit will come out from the rear. the bolt i think is simple to replace. you can see in the diagram that the bolt slides into the slotted mounting bracket, it has a rubber mount round it, the whole lot just slides out sideways along the slots. (if i remember right)
