Priming Engine Oil After Storage

Post by Jimbob1979 » Mon Dec 30, 2013 3:14 pm

Hi, my Bongo 2.5TD has been off the road for a few months and i am nervous about causing damage when starting it if the oil has all drained from the engine. Is there a recomended way to do this? I thought i could remove the plug from the cut off solenoid and crank it a few times prime the engine first.

Just turn the starter as soon as you switch the ignition on, without waiting for the glow plugs to heat up - that'll circulate some oil, before the engine fires.

In theory it shouldn't matter if its been stood for 1 day or 1 year as the oil will always drain back to the sump. Apart from checking all the fluid levels & tyre pressures, it would be worth ensuring the battery is fully charged & you may get a bit of a jolt when first moved as the brakes release.
