Help for a Newbie

Post by BecG » Wed Dec 18, 2013 9:51 pm

Hi everyone,

Please forgive me if this is in the wrong place. I'm in desperate need of help.

We bought our Bongo called Minty back in May and so far she has been amazing.

However, last week I'd been driving her for an hour on the motorway at 70mph, came back home to collect my son and left her for 20 minutes turned off. When I came back to restart her she wouldn't start, the dash board came on, the LPG I switched on to petrol (as a just in case) but still she didn't turn over, the dash lit up like normal but nothing, just lots of trying to catch but the engine wouldn't start.

So a couple of hours later my husband went to check her, she started first time and he drove home (5 minutes away). Next day he did a test and drove round the block, all seemed well. Then he ran her for 20 minutes and she just cut out dead, almost like the engine had heated up and she just cut out. This has continued to happen and does so on both LPG and petrol. We had to be recovered and the chap who brought us home, said it sounded like the Crank Shaft sensor could possibly have over heated or is faulty, as he's collected 12 Bongos over the years and nearly half of them needed a replacement.

We've also noticed that she was a bit sluggish but put it down to the cold weather and needing to let her tick over a bit longer.

A very good mechanic friend had a look and he's stumped because there is no electricity getting to the spark plugs once the Bongo has cut out and is warm. He tricked her into restarting but she cut out again almost immediately. He's managed to borrow a Bongo diagnostics machine but we've yet to plug her in and see what's going on there. (We've all got the dreaded day jobs!)

So I've come to you guys to see if you have a clue? I've spoken to another mechanic, who think it's the air intake (which it isn't) or the spark and glow plugs (it isn't.) The LPG runs fine, the petrol has been running fine and I leave her to tick over for a few minutes with the colder weather.

She is a 2.5 V6 Petrol 1997 (P Reg) Mazda Bongo that is LPG converted, she has 50,000km on the clock and until the past week has run like clockwork. If anyone can point us in the right direction I would be immensely grateful. :)

Not much idea I'm afraid, but so sorry to hear you're having problems.

Are you near enough to Worcester for Dave to take a look?

Edit: Welcome to the Forum.

Sorry guys,

I did do a search but unless you know specifically what to look for, I got a lot of unrelated posts. ;)

Thanks though, love it here and am now a fully paid up member too! :)

P.S. I live in North Yorkshire and Worcester isn't around the corner sadly!

There are several on the Forum with LPG / V6 Bongos .. I am one of them ..!!

Remember .. they start on petrol .. then when up to temperature switch over and run on LPG ..

The only slight problem mine had was due to the ignition system not being 100% OK .. it was cured when I fitted new plugs .. dizzy cap .. rotor and plug leads ..

if the mechanic is not getting an H/T spark .. then I would thing the ignition side need looking at as a 'Maybe it's the ' ....

That is the classic symptoms of a crank or cam sensor problem, they start to fail when hot but work OK when they cool down. The usual test is ton pour a little water over the sensor when it fails and then see if it starts back up again - might be a little tricky on a Bongo.

I think this is the crankshaft sensor as viewed under the van, looking at the front of the engine with the under tray removed:

Perhaps freezer spray (from Maplins) might be easier than getting water into the connector.

Freezer spray might break something, its going to be quite hot, a little water from a washing up bottle should be OK, they are weatherproof connectors. Is there a cam sensor as well?

Fair point: you don't want to crack anything. Might be a cam sensor although never need to check. I know all the sensors are listed in the engine manual, but mine is no currently to hand.
