Whining noise in reverse?

Hi all

I have a 1997 4wd, if i reverse in a straight line all is fine, if i go on left lock while reversing i start to get a whining noise. Took it back to the dealer and they said it was the handbrake sticking on 1 side. As i have not used the vehicle since they said they had sorted it,i thought all was good, however went out in it today and the whining is there again.
My question is would the handbrake sticking cause this noise only when turning left lock in reverse, all is fine in all forward gears.

Any advise would be great,

Could be a worn diff (either front or rear)? When reversing, the drive will be on the opposite side of the meshing surfaces of the gears. If you then are turning a corner, one wheel will be traveling a further distance than the other and difference in rotation has to be absorbed by the planetary gears. Have you changed the front and rear diff oil? It's due to be changed every 60,000 miles.

I would expect a binding brake component to squeal / squeak rather than whine.

Hi Simon

Thanks for you reply, i am the first UK owner,so when i bought the vehicle the dealer fully serviced it cam belt,filters, fluids etc. This also included diff oil front and rear, this is all listed in the service book they gave me, the vehicle had done 62190. Its getting near to the end of its warranty, so would like to get it sorted soon.

But am i correct in thinking that IF it was the handbake sticking on 1 side, it would make that noise moving in a straight line forward or reverse?

Any more help would be great

IF ... it is the hand brake shoes sticking on ..try giving the centre of the wheel a 'smack' with a rubber mallet / lump of wood it may free them ..

One of the things with the Bongo .. is you have to be in 'P'ark to remove the ignition key .. so some drivers do not always use the handbrake ..

Another point .. as the hand brake is enclosed, it is not self cleaning .. if the brake disc is not occasionally removed, there tends to be a build up of dust inside the drum and mechanism ..

Remember .. the hand brake friction lining are very thin, and ..IF .. sticking on would be vulnerable to excessive (expensive) wear ..!!

If there was a build up of dust inside the drum, would this only become apparent when turning the steering in reverse? I can move forward and reverse in a straight line, all is quiet, as soon as i reverse and turn the steering to the left the whining starts.

My Omega used to make a 'rubbing' noise when reversing ..untill one day it refused to move backwards ..

When I took the rear discs off .. one off the hand brake friction linings had rusted off the metal shoe ..

If you do a search .. there have been a couple of cases of 'whistling' noises .. but not only when in reverse ..

Well... its going in to local garage for them to have a look at on Tuesday, so that may save me 120 mile round trip to dealers, depending on diagnosis. If its a cheap fix all well and good, if its a worn diff it will have to be done under warranty.

We had rear diff replaced a year after getting bongo
Noise was at speed, did not hear anything at low speed. Diff noise is very distinctive inside and outside vehicle.

Ours did actually go bang so when turning corners we got a very loud graunching sound. It was virtually undriveable, low speed to garage.

Well... so far so good

Had the rear breaks stripped,cleaned,lubricated, handbrake adjusted, and all seems fine at the moment.
