Is this gearbox noise? Not sure..

Post by DanUK » Sat Sep 07, 2013 6:45 pm

OK, a week after our Bongo has come back from having a new master cylinder, it sounds like a new problem has emerged! I don't think it is related to master cylinder, as fluid level in master cylinder is ok.

We were driving round today when we heard a clattering/clacking noise seemingly coming from outside the bongo. It was quite intermittent and I thought it could be something like the exhaust coming loose and clattering against something else.

However, when we pulled over and I checked underneath, I couldn't see anything loose. At idle I noticed the noise coming from the middle/front underneath.

We set off again and noticed that the noise become almost tractor like, especially when in gear and accelerating. After another stop and setting off again the noise appeared to disappear apart from being obscenely and worryingly loud in 5th gear!

Having just come home I have recorded a short video of the sound at idle and under a few revs in neutral, Currently, in 5th gear, it's 10 times worse. I'm pointing the video camera at where the noise appears to be coming from but I can't get my head in enough to get an exact point.

Here's the vid: http://youtu.be/6oXyublZmoc

Any ideas? It's a manual gearbox bongo BTW.

Thanks

Does the noise change/alter when the clutch is depressed?
Check there's oil in box !

give alan a ring, he will always help.

mine was a real pig to set up (manaul) after fitting a clutch i had to replace the master and slave cylinders to get it all to work right.
is there enough free play in the clutch pedal. if one of the cylinders has failed it could cause damage to the clutch or thrust bearing.

pull the clutch arm in the off direction and see if the noise alters.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the sound appears to dissapear when I depress the clutch. I'll take it into Allen's as soon as I can but wanted to guage what it might be first...and the cost!!

Sounds like it may be a release bearing fault or even primary shaft may be worn ,the bearing sit and slides on this part

This sounds very similar to our manual when 5th gear went and on ours too it sounded much better with the clutch in. Brorabongo also used to have a manual bongo and, at the Glencoe meet, he commented that 5th went on his too. May be a weakness in the gearbox. I hope I'm wrong because it wasn't a cheap fix.

It is like a thrust bearing - always a good move to replace the thrust bearing when doing a clutch to balance the parts serviceable life so you don't have to duplicate the works!!!!

Gearbox has gone unfortunately :(

Now that we've purchased a replacement vehicle we're not sure whether it's worth the £400 + VAT replacement 4WD manual gearbox plus the £140 + VAT to fit it to get it working again to sell as a driveable vehicle...or sell it spares or repair.

At least with a knackered gearbox we don't have to explain why it kept popping out of third gear for as long as we've had it (normal for a manual??) and maybe not be so concerned that even though it is a 4WD it has the 2WD markings/logo on the bodywork!!

Go on Ady, there's bound to be room under the bed to squeeze in an extra Bongo ;)
