Post by Furydav » Thu Oct 17, 2013 5:59 pm

Ive got a small squeak almost inaudible over the engine noise but its there. can you please listen to these two clips and help me identify what it is? No problems with No1 exhaust stud or obvious cyl head leak , coolant system remains sound, no leaks. its drivnig me nuts now.

Any assitance / view appreciated ta

its deffo rev related towards the front of the engine so i would check/spray the belts, and maybe wire brush clean the pulleys.
then check the idler pulley that tensions the aircon belt, the bearing could need lube or replacing.
then the crank pulley, this is a 2 part pulley, bonded together with rubber, this can seperate, as it does it can squeak then later rattle.
finally it could be the alternator bearings.

Remove the belts and see if it stops, second to try if dont stop ,check manifold for broken studs or exhaust manifold gasket leaking

You can check if it's the belts by squirting some water on them from a spray bottle (sort of thing Mr Muscle comes in). If the noise goes away briefly, then it's time to change the belts and check the condition of the pulleys. May be worth giving them a once over with a wire brush to roughen up any glaze where the belt makes contact.

Hi, check the idle pulley wheel on the engine where the 3 belts go over...? The pulley wheel where the grooves for just the 2 alternator belts go is a bonded disco/cylinder to the main wheel before the AC belt..? If this bonding has gone it will make a similar noise to the second link posted with the gravel in..

In this instance the only thing turning the water pump & alternator is the tention on the new belts..?
Is the noise more noticeable from the front of the vehicle as the acoustics travel out under the bulkhead to the space under the bonnet.?

Bye the way, I'm using an ipad mini & the link works fine in Safari... Puffin free can play flash too!
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...
