diagnosis...stud #1
am I right in thinking that this is a sheared #1 bolt that I've heard so much about? would go hand in hand with the engine whine I seem to have developed
.......... cycling more.

fraid so mate, check the others carefully too. the black soot marks around the missing stud/nut also show you whats leaking past the gasket.
