As per title - any ideas why the side loading door's electric motor sounds when closing the door?

Check the fuse & check the contacts are clean. Have you recently disconnected or had a flat battery? That can cause issues which are widely discussed on the forum.

Door contacts appear to be free and not restricted. Do you happen to know what the fuse number is by any chance? I don't have a manual!!

Not off the top of my head, but there are factsheets for the fuse locations & sliding door problems in the members area.
