A quick Google suggests typical solenoid (VW Lupo 1.7) consumes about 25 Watts or 2 Amps. If you assumed that as a minimum & used a relay rated 10 Amps you shouldn't go far wrong. However, you could check it with a multi-meter to satisfy yourself this is ok.

shame...I have a relay rated at 5A that I wanted to use....going to have get the fluke out now and see for sure ! Will report back once I've got an answer....

fyi...I unplugged the grey plug and stuck a meter between the solenoid contacts as I could easily get to the head of the solenoid itself....on starting it gave a max of 1.43A..whilst running it dropped back to around 1.1-1.2A...
