Oil leak

Post by Coradia63 » Sat Aug 31, 2013 11:33 pm

I have a small oil leak from around the oil filter area first of all I thought it was the oil filter so I replaced the filter with a better quaility blueprint one but it still leaks I checked the filter sealing surface was good no damage so it must be coming from somewhere else its not coming down from as high up as the cylinder head as its a new head with all new gaskets and is still nice and clean not even the slightest signs of a leak.

Its quite difficult to get a good look around the top side of the oil filter area with the exhaust manifold attached but dont particulary want to remove it after having just rebuilt it! has anyone else had a leak from this area?

Cheers

Could be the gasket where the filter mount fits onto the oil cooler? You may need to get an inspection mirror or lightly dust some talc in the area to see where it's coming from.

Is the oil Blowing from the front of the head (camshaft seal)? was the oil seal/O ring between the head and the block replaced, is the valve cover gasket ok.

Good Luck.

Got round to looking into this today the oil was running down from above the oil filter but below the cylinder head directly behind the turbo couldn't really see much tried an inspection mirror all I could see was a pool of oil on the top of the engine oil cooler was concerned it was coming from the cylinder head gasket so bit the bullet and removed the exhaust manifold.

After stripping it down found the oil was leaking from a loose blanking plug in the new cylinder head that was behind the exhaust manifold gasket which I couldn't see from the top relieved it was a simple fix and at the same time annoyed it was loose probably the only thing I didn't double check before I fitted it!
