Undertray R & I

Post by hijimhere » Fri Aug 23, 2013 12:57 am

I had reason to remove the engine undertray to aid with lining up the belts on the crank pulley. Unfortunately most of the nuts sheared as they were rusted solid, wishing i had squirted a bit of WD40, I have some work to do to drill out whats left in the captive nuts and replace them. Just after any tips that might be known before I make a start. Thanks

Can't help but will be watching any replies as I have a couple gone but enough to hold it for time being. When the next couple go I'll have to do this too.

If there is some of the remaining bolt protruding from the back of the captive nut, and there is reasonable access to it - apply lots of heat from a blowlamp then unscrew with a pair of molegrips. Otherwise, drill-out and retap or simply screw a big self-tapper into it!

Thanks - do have some thread showing up the top - I don't have a torch but I do have a heat gun - heat should break the rust seal and make it a lot easier to extract whats left ---just wondering if I might get a double nut on what there is of thread - trial and error - If I remember the bold are 10mm - will give it a go when the weather is a bit better
