Auto gearbox 2.5TD 1996 - overfilled

I have had the Bongo running well without any real transmission problems bar the occasional noise (quiet clunk) moving off after a spell at idle. having just done the alternator and air con belts I thought a level check before packing up -- oil ok between L & F - ATF check & double check as the level is way over the max, in fact it is right up to the top of the flat piece where L & F are. This was engine off/cold. Is this normal?

If you don't know when it was last changed, it is probably worth dropping the sump and changing the oil. It should be replaced every 2 years according the service schedule factsheet:

Hi,you need to check the level with the Engine Running and in Park.
