Belts Alternator & aircon

Post by hijimhere » Wed Aug 07, 2013 10:04 am

Bought belts which were listed for 2.5 td - supplied with toothed belts which appear to long for alternator. Also air con is toothed but not yet determined if length is ok. Belts on engine are bog standard V belts. I had the new belts for a while before looking to change & having a comparison with whats fitted. Are the V's being displaced by toothed versions? I'd much prefer to stick with V if I can?

I might be wrong here so correct me anyone.

I think the belt sizes are: Aircon belt size; 1000 x 13mm, Alternator/ waterpump - 1090 x 13mm.

The toothed belts do not require as much tension to grip the pulleys than the standard v belts, and so dont put as much strain on the bearings.

Dont know whether the toothed belts have the same lifespan as V belts though, i suspect not.

I was also advised sometime ago that if you have a two belt pulley system like our alternator setup that you should ask for a matched pair of belts, (having been cut of the production belt Tube sequencially and packaged together). you can buy paired sets for some Motor factors but normally i get a blank look when i ask. this is to reduce slight variations in belt diameter.

when you fit un-matched belts you can sometimes get a little bit of play in one of them, which look a lot when the engine is running.

If they've come from the club shop, they'll be the right size :).
