2.5 TD manual -Oil Pressure lamp: time taken to extinguish

Post by johnzbenson » Fri Nov 03, 2006 3:17 am

Perhaps due to the onset of the cold weather I have noticed that from a cold start the oil pressure lamp can take up to 3.5 seconds to extinguish. all levels for coolant /oils are at the max for the vehicle and the oil was changed some 4000 miles ago. Is the time taken significantly longer than it should be? is it indicative of perhaps other issues tired oil pump, blockages etc or is it hopefully just a quirk of the Bongo. after running the vehicle for five minutes and switching off, then on again. the lamp
goes out almost instantly as I believe it should. I just don't like the idea of the "top end" of the engine doing a hundred RPM or so from cold without being lubricated and i am considering Slick 50 or Magnatec as an added safeguard. any thoughts or comments please.

The recommended oil change interval for this type of turbo diesel is 3000 miles. Having said that I find the Bongo to be a quirky beast as I find it can take a few seconds for all the dash indicator lights to extinguish and it can be entirely random in the order in which they go out.

I remember a post on this topic last year, people were timing the delay! most came back with three seconds.

May thanks to the members who have contributed and to Ian for digging up the old forum entry( i really must persevere at using the search command) just to say If i had any doubts about buying a Bongo a whole fortnight ago they have completely dissappeared after joining BONGO FURY. Thanks again.

thanks fellow BF members:Regular oil changes Always!

Post by johnzbenson » Sat Nov 04, 2006 8:07 pm

Thanks for that everyone. I now feel reasonably happy its a quirk of the engine.thats probably the last word on the subject. I'm doing a oil change on the bongo next week just to make sure. My bongo has 54000 miles on it now and on the oil change i think i'll add some slick 50 to the oil. On my last old diesel motor when I did this. I had to "back off" the tickover since the reduction of friction in the engine was definitely noticeable. i don't supose it can hurt, can it?

I swear by slick 50, always worked a treat on the bikes I've had!

Since the onset of colder weather I had noticed a distinct hesitation/reluctance from My Bongo particularly on a morning,it was running OK but I had a feeling that it was a bit under the weather so to speak.
On Sunday last I went and bought STP Diesel injection system cleaner and Slick 50.

I added the STP to my tank before filling up with diesel then went home and added the Slick 50 to the oil.

I cannot believe the difference this has made to My Bongo.

Before the sceptics start I have used Slick 50 before on other vehicles but they were considerably younger than the Bongo with a hell of a lot less miles, any difference was very discernable. However on the Bongo,as the week has progressed since first putting these in:-
Starting up has become easier (more instant and quieter)
Accelleration has become much more responsive I have suprised quite a few car drivers (it wouldnt do this before!)
Engine has become a lot quieter
The Bongo now feels like its wanting to go rather than being forced to do it.
As for MPG I dont know as I didnt buy a Bongo for fuel economy I dont really watch it, plus currently most of My driving is local anyway so any improvement I would have thought would come on long journeys.

Altogether I can recommend it for anyone to try I have been amazed the difference both products have made to mine I for one am chuffed with the results.

Cheers Dabs

oil pressure light

Post by kingchris » Tue Dec 26, 2006 1:10 pm

Don't know if anyone else knows this ,the 2,5 diesel engine has a low oil level warning system that lights up the oil light when the oil level drops below about 3 to 4 litres . It is located on the drivers side of the sump and consists of a float mechanism. This device saved my engine when I developed a major leak at the oil filter during a out of town journey.Problem now is the light refuses to go out!.I have however a oil pressure guage fitted so I use that as monitor for the oil pressure.
