Oil light stays on for 5 seconds after starting
I recently gave my Bongo TD a service and I have noticed that when I start it from cold the oil light stays illuminated for about 5 seconds and the engine sounds a little noisy until it goes out.
The filter that I used was a UFI which I read are OEM quality. The only thing that I can think is that the drain back valve is not working properly. The oil that I used was 5w30 and I am not sure what was in there before as It is the first service that I have given it so it may have been thicker.
Has anyone had any problems with these filters or any idea what else may be causing this to happen.

Hi 5 seconds sounds too long mine is out after about 1 sec and I think that is too long

Thanks for the link. Had a read through but not sure this is the same issue as the guy mentioned it's happening when the engine is running where as mine is just at start up. Seems like for some reason the oil is draining from the system when the engine is not running

How is the level looking on the dipstick when checked cold, on a level surface?

It's absolutely fine. I do have a small oil leak which I am struggling t find the source of but this only seems to have been since I did the service and the oil leak was there before

Hi Jimbob, some warning lights can take a wee while to go out depending on the state of the oil switch, however I would be concerned about the engine noise that you can hear before the light goes out.If it was ok before you changed the filter I would replace with a new filter with none return disc and dump valve fitted.
If that does not cure the problem I would test the oil pressure, the oil jets shut down at (aprox)under 25 Psi,this can cause overheating of the pistons.
Good Luck.

Thanks. I spoke to a guy yesterday who said the oil I used is too thin. I put in 5w30 which I thought was right but I am going to change it to 10w40 like he suggested and I have ordered a blueprint filter so hopefully that will do it

That's probably it. The factsheet recommends 10W/40 for normal use:

Changed the oil to 10w40 and put in a new Blueprint filter over the and this is still happening. I have spoken to a few garages and some of them say it is normal and others say not.
Can anyone tell me how long their oil light stays on for on a cold start?

Hi Jimbob, you need to get the oil pressure checked ASAP.

Do you know what the host and cold pressures should be?

At normal operating temperature around 60 - 70psi (58.3 -69.6psi) @3000rpm

I think i may know someone who has a guage i can borrow. I take it it connects in place of the oil pressure sensor? Does the oil need to be drained to connect this up?

Re: Oil light stays on for 5 seconds after starting
No need to drain the oil .. with the engine off ..remove the oil pressure switch .. best put a dab of thread sealant (or PTEF tape) on the end of the gauge and screw it in place of the switch...
Start the engine see how the oil pressure builds / stays up ..
It is normal for a cold engine to show an higher pressure and 'ease' back as the engine warms up ..
There is a oil pressure release valve built into the system to allow for gobbed up oil filters .. thick gungy oil ..
