I've been under the bongo and found a tag on the gearbox.
It has the following info on it:

UM012
1917867D

Mean anything to anyone?

Had a chat with Alacrity and gained a lot of information on what I need. Sadly it really narrowed down I need a very specific gearbox.... Cost of rebuild circa £1400...!
So far no S/H ones forthcoming.... If anyone has a possible source

I've come round to thinking that (sadly) 1400 quid I'd not that big a bill on cars these days. If Alacrity rebuilt it, you ought to have a solid result. Buying and fitting a box of unknown history won't be that cheap, if you can source one.

I suppose as a comparison at £1400 .. it's around the price of getting an head replaced on a Diesel ..

Was there a specific reason the gearbox failed completely, the opinion seems generaly they are quite robust ..

I can only guess at, having the gearbox cleaned out maybe wasn't such a good idea. I've since understood they put dex 2 in when I believe it should be 3... Can't see that would be catastrophic ...I asked the garage to clean the labarinth out. Now I can only think that may have moved some sludge the wrongvway and blocked the valves....
Bottom line some nasty metallic scraping sounds coming from the gearbox area and then no drive. if I wait for 10 mins not running Start it up I get drive for 500yrds then it lets go again. Checking the oil level its full and clean...

Could it just be the torque converter? I don't know enough about autos... I guess I'm gona learn...

Presumably, if the garage used the wrong type of ATF, they are taking some responsibility for rectifying the resultant fault?

Apparently Mazda stated dex' 2.... and that's what they used. Looking into it 2 to 3 isn't that significant

Unlikely that's the cause of failure. ....?

blocked oilways? don't know if anyone has had such a problem. Don't think it's a common problem. Don't read about this sort of problem everyday....

Time flies .. although it only seems a couple of year back it was actually ten when I had my 1999 Omega 2.5TD auto box serviced by a local guy who only does auto boxes and nothing else at all ..

I was charged £60 for the fluid out .. sump off .. valve block off .. filters off .. all parts thoroughly cleaned inc: sump pan and magnet .. some parts replaced (filter??) .. brake bands 'nipped up' .. sump replaced .. fresh fluid .. road test ..!!

All this while I watched the guy working under the ramp ( Health & Safety??) who talked me through what he was doing..

To me it looked quite simple .. I just wish I had watched when he torqued up the brake bands then how much he 'backed' them off ..

I popped it some time back with the Bongo .. a basic fluid change (I assume sucked out via the dip stick tube) is now £60 .. sump off job as my old Omega above .. £160..!!

I think they charged me something like that...1 1/2 hrs + the oil which from Mazda ain't cheap!

I supplied the gasket for the sump. They would only order one from Mazda which would take "at least 6 weeks" ....

It is reckoned that the earlier Mazda auto boxes (and maybe later??) are Nippon boxes as used in Taxis so I would have thought the gaskets easier to source (??) ..

When I took my bongo in to .. https://plus.google.com/106592590594812 ... l=uk&hl=en .. he was not fazed that it was a Bongo and said I could book it in when ever ..
