2 litre Petrol Auto Mazda Bongo / Ford Freda Air Filter Swap

Post by Purple Pixie » Sat Jun 15, 2013 11:48 pm

Since K&N do not make a replacement air filter for the Ford Freda / Mazda Bongo 2 litre petrol auto, I am in line for regular filter changes. So armed with the necessary paper/plastic filter I was prepared for a new experience....

The job was really simple. (I'll take some photos tomorrow in daylight)

Open the drivers side access up
Find the air filter casing to the right rear of the opening
Unclip the 2 wire connector to the air temperature sensor on the front of the airbox
Unclip the multi-connector from the airflow meter.
Release the cable tie around the wires leading to these on the side of the airbox
Undo the 4 big clips around the airbox
Now lift the top of the airbox up and back to expose the filter element

Now you might either be amazed your van has had a filter change when it was imported
(as I did when I saw the filter had a .co.uk web address on it)

OR

Be shocked to see it has a genuine japanese one in it)

Fit the new filter and note the mileage in your little book

Refit the lid, the clips, the connectors and the cable tie

Vroom Vroom!!!!

Happy to learn how to do it the right way! I only wish a K&N element was available

Measure it as it might be same size as diesel for which you can get one

The diesel filter is cylindrical, the 2 litre is a flat element.

The 2 litre appears to be the same size as V6, so order the appropriate K&N one:

INDEED despite me contacting K&N in Warrington for the gospel truth (which was, from them, "we don't do one") the filter here http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/produ ... od=33-2117 cross-references here http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/kn_cr ... rt=33-2117 thus:

AC Delco A1149C
Fram CA6558 >>>>>> this cross references to my paper filter
Mazda JF0113Z40 >>>>> as does this
Purolator A34625
WIX 46148

and the applications here: http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/appli ... od=33-2117

List the 2200 variants which I understand are indicative of the Bongo setup

The dimensions of the K&N

Height: 1.188 in (30 mm)**
Outside Length: 9.125 in (232 mm)**
Outside Width: 7.75 in (197 mm)**

Compare well with the

Height [mm] 39**
Inner Length [mm] 208
Inner Width [mm] 173
Outer Length [mm] 236**
Outer Width [mm] 200**

of the paper filter I just fitted

QUESTION THUS: Has anyone got one of these in their filter box??

Induction roar under your bottom eh ?? :)

This is the V6 air box which should be the same as yours (compare the number on the white sticker):

I've used K&Ns in both my Bongos and I can't say I noticed an difference in performance or noise between a good quality OEM filter, but long term you should save money with the extended period between cleaning although you have to factor in the recharge kit costs.

At least you have the FE denotation for 2.0l and Simon's has the J5 denoting V6 on his air box
