Relays noisy and hard to start.
I hope someone knows the answer to this one.
From having being starting first time and running well all winter my Bongo now makes lots of clicking noises from under the drivers side of the bonnet as soon as the ignition is turned on. Whinn I crank the engine it now takes ages to start and i need to press accelerator to the floor (it use to start without pressing accelerator). Once it filally starts I get loads of smoke but onece running it goes well all day untill the next morning.
Thank's
Paul

Assuming it's white smoke, get your glow plugs checked.

OK.. Thanks John.
So what is all the clicking noise from under the bonnet about then ?
The light for the glow plugs on the dash is not flashing on and off with the clicking.
Still I will have a go at metering the Glow plugs anyway ,
Thanks for the Reply

Hi Paul,it sounds like the Glow plug Relay and or wiring is needing attention.Check for a 12 Volt feed at the glow plug Rail.

IIRC, the glow plug light and the glow plug relay are controlled independently by the ECU.paulsilsby wrote:So what is all the clicking noise from under the bonnet about then ?

Re: Relays noisy and hard to start.
lift the drivers seat and listen while you try to start it, if the clicking happens,do the fans come on.
if yes check the starter battery.
low battery will be hammered by the glow plugs causing them to not heat up correctly, repeated attempting to start will heat up the cylinders eventually allowing it to start.
maybe

As its a nice sunny day I have got the seat up un the drivers side.
Problem is I can't see where the glow plugs are ?

You can't miss them - they're under the metal bar that connects them all together, with a thick wire coming from the front of the bar.paulsilsby wrote:As its a nice sunny day I have got the seat up un the drivers side.

Re: Relays noisy and hard to start.
OK Yes
you are right. I had not realised that they would all be connected together. Anyway so now with my meter connected to the glow plug supply rail i find that when I turn the ignition on ,that the glow plug indicator comes on on the dash. Although i do not get 12V appearing on the meter untill the light on the dash goes out. Then the meter reading goes on and off a few times in sync with the clicking noise. So yes guys the Glow plug indicator loght has nothing to do with wether the glow plugs are on or not. Found the clicking (erratic) to be coming from a unit just behind the battery over the wheel arch on drivers side. I guess this is the infamous Glow Plug relay that costs £80. Still relays either stay on or off unless the supply to them is bad ? i think, so is it the relay then guys ?

Re: Relays noisy and hard to start.
The relay is controlled by the ECU and hence it should "click" and switch on to start with (12 volts appears on bus bar), then at some point after the light has gone it will click" and go off, but then may well come back on again if the ECU determines that the temperature/revs etc. aren't right. But the fact that your not getting the initial 12 volts indicates that either the fuse has gone or the relay is kaput - so check the fuse first its mounted in-line behind the battery area;

and then check out the relay in more detail - like pop the lid off and see what is happening.
