loads of white smoke

Post by themitch » Wed Dec 20, 2006 10:33 pm

evening all

Hope some one can help me

for the last few mornings when i fire up the bongo i get clouds of white smoke. this lasts for about a minute then goes away.

Today whilst travelling to gloucester loads of white smoke returned at the temp gauge shot up to the top of the range so pulled over stright away.

left it to cool for 30 mins check water level that was up near full.

so turned around to drive home all seemed fine then started to overheat again with loads of white smoke but seemed to have a shortage of power.

This afternoon when all was cold check the oil this was clean. and the water level was fine any ideas?

Thanks
PHil

maybe head gasket or cracked engine block, if it keeps bellowing white smoke try some wonder weld before spending $$$$$

firstly i must point out - i am technically clueless

i had a car that used to do this - and basically when you checked the oil it showed signs of emulisification.

tracked it down to cylinder head gasket - head was fine - just needed removed - cleaned and then a new gasket and properly torqued

It sounds like a head gasket problem, or it could be an airlock in the cooling system, either way get it checked out a.s.a.p. and do not run the bongo any distance till checked

wonder weld

The last thing you want to put in rad is rad seal, wonder weld or any thing that will clog rad up and cause more over heating problems ,take the van to a garage and get them to test it for head gasket

I've got a head gasket (and a bolt set) in stock if you need it.

well my sisters engine blobk cracked. At first we spent 60- + parts on a new head gasket set, then we found it was a cracked engine block. My dad bought a 10 gbp bottle on wonderweld for a cracked engine block and it did the job for 14 months, it then started bellowing white smoke again so he did the same again and its still running. 10 gbp or a new engine???

hi next time you take a head off get it tested for cracks ,it will save money in the long term ,now if you repair your head you will have to put new radiator in ,because all you are doing is blocking the cores up in rad ?and remember what causes crack heads is OVER HEATING ?i sell hiace campers every van has rad taken out and flow tested yes even at 40000 miles, never had cracked head , out of 14 campers this year 10 new rads where flow was restricted ? , i advise any jap import to have rad tested when imported its not a big job but will save you a fortune later ?

Peter, whilst I admire your optimism, it is unlikely likely to be an airlock causing white smoke I'm afarid! Whichever way, proper expert diagnosis of the problem - gasket head or block - is essential - ASAP.
