Fitting lower ball joint boots

Post by phil 1 » Wed Mar 20, 2013 10:26 pm

Hi
I am trying to replace the lower ball joint boot for the MOT next week. I have read the post at the top of the page regarding the boots but I'm still not 100% sure how to fit it.
If anyone that has successfully fitted one could you please give me some pointers on how to go about fitting them as I don’t wont to b****r the boot.
Many thanks
Phil

jack up one wheel, remove wheel, remove the split pin then FULLY remove the nut, then dont use a splitter, just give the swivel several good hits with a heavy hammer, the joint will then split without damage, the hub weight will do it for you. dig out the old rubber and the gripping ring from the wishbone.
check the ball joint carefully, clean it off, then check for sideways resistance, there should be some, if the joint just falls over to one side or can be pushed over easily then the joint maybe on its way out.
if the joint feels tight in its movement then repack with a little grease and fit the new rubber using a correct sized piece of pipe or a socket, push on carefully and keep it square on . dont push the top seal down the taper, when it is fitted on the swivel this will push it down the taper.
