CV joint removal from wheel hub

Hi been lurking in the shadows for a while and clueing myself up.

I am attempting (i say attempting as its not going as smoothly as I would have liked) an outer CV joint replacement On my bongo. Ive removed the wheel hub nut disconnected the wishbone from the wheel hub disconnected the steering rod and am currently trying to extract the cv joint from the wheel hub and this is where I'm stuck.

Im using a hub puller but have just snapped 2 bolts on the thing trying to shift the cv joint. Am I missing something? and suggestions of how to shift this thing.

going to hopefully borrow a mig welder tomorrow and heat the hub up as this thing it still not shifting.

If you take the drive shaft away from gearbox with the hub still on shaft put diesel onto the hub where the nut normally sits leave it overnight and sometimes you find the pixies move it if you leave it under load ,ie witha vice or a clamp,might get you out a spot,old engineers trick!!

Its currently drowning in WD40 with the hub extractor done as tight as I can safely do with 2 wedges hammered in the back betweed the hub and CV joint.

I'm going to leave it to marinade overnight. Lets hope the pixies visit in the night

a sharp hard crack usually shifts it. watch any heat you may damage the wheel bearing/grease.

Done some serious clouting already to no avail. On the bongo and my fingers. Decided to have a rest day today, unfortunately the pixies must have been on holiday as they didnt shift it in the night. Will have a go at removing the drive shaft this week and do the old soaking in diesel jobby. Failing that talk nicely to a local welder and see if i can borrow a blow torch for an hour or so to cook the hub.

Oh well go until the summer to sort it. I'm a fair weather camper. Give it 6 months and I might shift it by then.

Woo hoo job done.

6 new high tensile bolts for the hub puller tightened to the max while installed to the hub. A bucket load of WD40, 1 modified braker bar, 1 lump hammer for stress relief, 1 crowbar to hold the hub and 1 hernia using sheer force to crack that beauty.

Now seven days behind my original shedule but at least on my day of this friday I can actually have a crack at replacing the CV joint.

Lets hope I've chosen the correct side. I dont fancy doing that again in a hurry.

You'll definitely need a hub puller. I even needed it to get the Brake disk off as mine was stuck fast.

Make sure you have a meaty breaker bar, my new one lasted about 10 minutes. I had to make one out of a hollow steel bar and an old knackered braker bar. Still going strong.

Personally If you are going to leave the axle in the vehicle i.e. not remove the whole thing. I would definitely recommend buying a CV joint puller. I sat for hours trying to get that thing of the drive shaft bought a puller and did it in 10 minutes no fuss. Not too expensive either mine was like this one ebay item 360609971195 (under £40 delivered)and it worked fine. I also used it to put the new one on as that was a bit tricky too. (a little hint to get the sprung washer beack on the axle I used one of those cheap zip ties tightened it around the washer then gently tightened the cv joint puller in reverse and it just popped back on like a dream) ok that was after about half hour of swearing trying to get it on with pliers and my fingers e.t.c.

Also make sure you have the right size socket bits for the hub nut my old hub nut was smaller than the new one so had to go out and buy a new one which set me back half a day.

Any questions I'm happy to try and help. I'm not expert but my bongos still alive.
